Racking Safety Inspection

A racking system inspection is a regular evaluation process conducted in warehouses and storage facilities to safeguard the well-being of employees and protect valuable inventory. Its primary objectives are to uphold safety standards, prevent potentially fatal accidents, and identify potential hazards that may require updates or modifications to the existing racking infrastructure.

Why is it important?

Generally speaking, racking systems are manufactured from relatively robust yet lightweight materials, and as such can only carry a certain amount of load. Any damage, minor or major, will reduce its load carrying capacity over time. The greater the damage, the less it can carry.

Beyond the fundamental obligation of guaranteeing the safety of employees, rack inspections are also crucial to the company for maintaining an excellent level of service. It directly impacts the company’s ability to maintain enough inventory to meet its demand.

How often should Inspections be performed?

A rigorous, detailed, and thorough inspection should be performed by a trained professional once every twelve months.

However, a weekly visual inspection by a dedicated warehouse technician will serve to mitigate most racking failures. This technician or individual should be someone who has undergone the relevant training in order to identify potential racking hazards. What is involved in the Inspection?

While the term “inspection” implies the result will be either a pass or fail, it can make an absolute difference between a safe working environment or a fatal one. As such, the inspection process is highly rigorous. Below are some of the processes:

  • Evaluating the current use of the racking against its intended purpose.
  • Ensuring correct load overhang and load stability.
  • Checking for deviations in beam levels, floor fixtures, and safety locks.
  • Identifying beam deflections, frame damage, and other issues.
  • Calibrating rack plumbness if it is found to be bent or damaged.
  • Generate an inspection report for auditing and maintenance needs.
